Amend a Return Español

If you discover an error on a previously filed return, you should file an amended return and pay any additional tax or fee due, including penalty and interest.

If your amended return results in a refund, the amended return will be treated as a claim for refund. You do not need to file a separate claim to obtain a refund. We will contact you if additional information is required to process your refund.

Amending Returns Electronically

To amend or correct a return please do the following:

  • Log in with your username and password to our secure website to get started. If you do not have a username and password, you can Sign Up Now to register for an online services profile.
  • On the Accounts tab, select the account you want to submit an amended return for.
  • On the Periods tab, select the reporting period you want to amend.
  • Under the I Want To section, select File, Amend, or Print a Return/Report.
  • Under the I Want To section, select Amend Return.
  • Complete the online tax return with your amended figures.
  • Select Next.
  • Follow the screen prompts to complete the submission process.

Note: We will apply payments you made with the original return filing to your amended return. Penalty and interest will adjust automatically when your amended return has been processed, generally overnight.

To amend or correct a period that is not available electronically, you will need to:

  • Make a copy of the original return you wish to amend.
  • Check the Amended Return box at the top of the return. If no checkbox is available, please write AMENDED RETURN on the top of the document.
  • Line through the original entries of the return and complete the document with the updated (or corrected) information.
  • Include a cover letter to explain the changes made to the original return.
  • Keep a copy of the amended return for your records.
  • Mail all documents, including any additional payment owed, to:
